&#8220;&#8230; AdSense for search, a great way for site owners to make money from search.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/kimkomando/2005-09-18-make-blogging-pay_x.htm"><span style="color:#333399;">Here&#8217;s how to make blogging pay</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Setup is simple&#8230;Google&#8217;s algorithm targets ads to your readers based on the page&#8217;s content.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/0,4621,323023,00.html"><span style="color:#333399;">Using Google to Promote Your Business</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Here&#8217;s how you can use your favorite search engine&#8217;s cool tools to market your online business.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.searchenginejournal.com/index.php?p=2110"><span style="color:#333399;">Section Targeting by Google AdSense</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;This just makes so much sense! As a publisher and Webmaster, you can tell your contextual ads, which content is the real content on the page.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/08/issue/brief_blogging.0.asp" target="_blank"><span style="color:#333399;">The Business of Blogging</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;And new, easy-to-use advertising services such as Google AdSense, which frees content creators from having to deal with actual advertisers, have breathed fresh life into online media.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/network/2005/07/26/WhatIsAdSense.html"><span style="color:#333399;">What Is AdSense</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Google&#8217;s AdSense program lets you sell advertising space for … ads that are relevant to your site&#8217;s content pages.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&amp;art_aid=31300"><span style="color:#333399;">Google Expands CPM Program</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Google will now allow all advertisers … the ability to target their contextual ads to any publisher site within the AdSense network, pay on a cost-per-impression basis, and serve image and animated ads.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3505766"><span style="color:#333399;">Google Opens Up Beta of AdSense for Feeds</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;&#8230;Google is opening up the beta program to all of its publisher partners.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/03/17/HNgoogleadsense_1.html" target="_blank"><span style="color:#333399;">Google improves AdSense with Ad Links</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Ad Links has been designed as a complement to the contextual ads served through AdSense.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/money/advertising/2005-03-10-google-ads-usat_x.htm"><span style="color:#333399;">Google&#8217;s AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Google has a simple proposition for anyone who owns a Web site: Let it put up links to its ads, and Google&#8217;s AdSense program will give you a piece of the action when someone clicks on them.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.digitaledge.org/digArtPage.cfm?AID=6757"><span style="color:#333399;">Google&#8217;s AdSense: Unassailable Logic in Search of a Response</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;&#8221;&#8230;all they do is put a piece of code on every Web page and we figure out how to deliver the most relevant advertising keywords to that page of content.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.alwayson-network.com/comments.php?id=8104_0_5_0_C"><span style="color:#333399;">The Google Economy =&gt; The Blogosphere</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;One idea emphasized here is that the &#8216;heart and soul&#8217; of making money through blogging is Google&#8217;s AdSense program.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.webpronews.com/ebusiness/smallbusiness/wpn-2-20040811UnderstandingGoogleAdSense.html"><span style="color:#333399;">Understanding Google AdSense</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;The website maintenance related to Adsense is very easy and requires very little effort.&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:8.5pt;font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/06/21/HNnewgoogleservices_1.html"><span style="color:#333399;">Google offers to rev up sites with two new services</span></a><br />
<span style="color:#333399;">&#8220;Google Inc. unwrapped two new search services for Web site publishers on Friday, promising to help them increase traffic and revenue from their sites&#8230;&#8221; </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;"><strong>Google AdSense</strong> is an </span><a title="Ad serving" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Ad_serving"><span style="color:#333399;">ad serving</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> program run by </span><a title="Google" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Google"><span style="color:#333399;">Google</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">. </span><a title="Website" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Website"><span style="color:#333399;">Website</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> owners can enroll in this </span><a title="Computer program" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Computer_program"><span style="color:#333399;">program</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> to enable text, image and, more recently, video </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Advertisement" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Advertisement"><span style="color:#333399;">advertisements</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> on their sites. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Cost Per Click" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Cost_Per_Click"><span style="color:#333399;">per-click</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> or </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Cost Per Impression" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Cost_Per_Impression"><span style="color:#333399;">per-thousand-impressions</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> basis. Google is also currently beta-testing a </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Cost Per Action" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Cost_Per_Action"><span style="color:#333399;">cost-per-action</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> based service.</span></p>
<p><span class="mw-headline"><strong><span style="color:#333399;">Overview :</span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">Google uses its search technology to serve ads based on website content, the user&#8217;s geographical location, and other factors. Those wanting to advertise with Google&#8217;s targeted ad system may sign up through </span><a title="AdWords" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/AdWords"><span style="color:#333399;">AdWords</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">. AdSense has become a popular method of placing advertising on a website because the ads are less intrusive than most banners, and the content of the ads is often relevant to the website.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">Currently, AdSense uses </span><a title="JavaScript" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/JavaScript"><span style="color:#333399;">JavaScript</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> code to incorporate the advertisements into a participating site. If it is included on a site which has not yet been crawled by the </span><a title="Mediabot" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Mediabot"><span style="color:#333399;">Mediabot</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, it will temporarily display advertisements for </span><a title="Charitable trust" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Charitable_trust"><span style="color:#333399;">charitable causes</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> known as </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Public service announcements" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Public_service_announcements"><span style="color:#333399;">public service announcements</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> (PSAs). (The Mediabot is a separate </span><a title="Web crawler" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Web_crawler"><span style="color:#333399;">crawler</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> from the </span><a title="Googlebot" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Googlebot"><span style="color:#333399;">Googlebot</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> that maintains Google&#8217;s search index.)</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">Many sites use AdSense to </span><a title="Monetization" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Monetization"><span style="color:#333399;">monetize</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> their content. AdSense has been particularly important for delivering advertising revenue to small sites that do not have the resources for developing advertising sales programs and salespeople. To fill a site with ads that are relevant to the topics discussed, webmasters implement a brief script on the sites&#8217; pages. Sites that are content rich have been very successful with this advertising program, as noted in a number of publisher case studies on the AdSense site.</span></p>
<p><sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-4"></a></sup></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">Some webmasters work hard to maximize their own AdSense income. They do this in three ways:</span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">They use a wide range of traffic generating techniques including but not limited to online advertising. </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">They build valuable content on their sites which attracts AdSense ads which pay out the most when they get clicked. </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">They use </span><a title="Copy (written)" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Copy_%28written%29"><span style="color:#333399;">copy</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> on their websites that encourage clicks on ads. Note that Google prohibits people from using phrases like &#8220;Click on my AdSense ads&#8221; to increase click rates. Phrases accepted are &#8220;Sponsored Links&#8221; and &#8220;Advertisements&#8221;. </span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">The source of all AdSense income is the AdWords program which in turn has a complex pricing model based on a </span><a title="Vickrey auction" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Vickrey_auction"><span style="color:#333399;">Vickrey</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> second price auction, in that it commands an advertiser to submit a sealed bid (not observable by competitors). Additionally, for any given click received, advertisers only pay one bid increment above the second-highest bid.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;"><strong>History :</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">The underlying technology behind AdSense was derived originally from </span><a title="WordNet" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/WordNet"><span style="color:#333399;">WordNet</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, </span><a title="Simpli" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Simpli"><span style="color:#333399;">Simpli</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> (a company started by the founder of Wordnet, </span><a title="George Armitage Miller" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/George_Armitage_Miller"><span style="color:#333399;">George A. Miller</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">) and a number of professors and graduate students from </span><a title="Brown University" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Brown_University"><span style="color:#333399;">Brown University</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, including </span><a title="James A. Anderson" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/James_A._Anderson"><span style="color:#333399;">James A. Anderson</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, </span><a title="Jeff Stibel" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Jeff_Stibel"><span style="color:#333399;">Jeff Stibel</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> and </span><a class="new" title="Steve Reiss (page does not exist)" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/w/index.php?title=Steve_Reiss&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1"><span style="color:#333399;">Steve Reiss</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-0">[1]</a></sup> A variation of this technology utilizing Wordnet was developed by Oingo, a small search engine company based in Santa Monica founded in 1998.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-1">[2]</a></sup> <sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-2">[3]</a></sup> Oingo changed its name to Applied Semantics in 2001,<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-3">[4]</a></sup> which was then bought by Google for $102 million in April 2003.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-4">[5]</a></sup></span></p>
<p><span class="mw-headline"><strong><span style="color:#333399;">AdSense for feeds :</span></strong></span></p>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">In </span><a title="May 2005" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/May_2005"><span style="color:#333399;">May 2005</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, Google announced a limited-participation beta version of <strong>AdSense for feeds</strong>, a version of AdSense that runs on </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="RSS (file format)" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29"><span style="color:#333399;">RSS</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> and </span><a title="Atom (standard)" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Atom_%28standard%29"><span style="color:#333399;">Atom</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> feeds that have more than 100 active subscribers. According to the Official Google Blog, &#8220;advertisers have their ads placed in the most appropriate feed articles; publishers are paid for their original content; readers see relevant advertising — and in the long run, more quality feeds to choose from&#8221;.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-google_blog_feed_me-5">[6]</a></sup></span></span></div>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">AdSense for feeds works by inserting images into a feed. When the image is displayed by the reader/</span><a title="Web browser" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Web_browser"><span style="color:#333399;">browser</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, Google writes the ad content into the image that it returns. The ad content is chosen based on the content of the feed surrounding the image. When the user clicks the image, he or she is redirected to the advertiser&#8217;s site in the same way as regular AdSense ads.</span></span></div>
<p><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">AdSense for feeds has remained in its beta state ever since its original announcement. Only selected AdSense users have been allowed to sign up for it, and no more users are being admitted to the program.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-google_adsense_feeds_beta-6">[7]</a></sup></span></p>
<p><a id="AdSense_for_search" name="AdSense_for_search"></a></p>
<p><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;"><strong>AdSense for search :</strong></span></span></p>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">A companion to the regular AdSense program, <strong>AdSense for search</strong> lets website owners place Google search boxes on their pages. When a user searches the web or the site with the search box, Google shares any ad revenue it makes from those searches with the site owner. However the publisher is paid only if the ads on the page are clicked: Adsense does not pay publishers for mere searches.</span></span></div>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;"><strong>AdSense for Mobile Content :</strong></span></span></span></div>
<p><span class="mw-headline"></p>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">AdSense for mobile content allows publishers to generate earnings from their mobile webpages using targeted Google ads. Just like AdSense for content, with AdSense for mobile content Google matches ads to the content of your site &#8212; in this case, your mobile website.</span></span></div>
<div><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;"><span class="mw-headline"><strong>XHTML Compatibility</strong></span></span></span></div>
<p><span class="mw-headline"><span style="color:#333399;">As of September 2007, the HTML code for the AdSense search box does not validate as XHTML, and does not follow modern principles of website design:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">non-standard closing tags such as <code>&lt;/img&gt;</code> and <code>&lt;/input&gt;</code> </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">the boolean (minimized) attribute <code>checked</code> rather than <code>checked="checked"</code> </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">presentational attributes other than id, class, or style, such as <code>bgcolor</code> and <code>align</code> </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">a table structure used for purely presentational (non-tabular) purposes </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">the <code>font</code> tag </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">In addition, the AdSense ad units use the document.write() Javascript code, which does not work in browsers when rendered with the application/xhtml+xml MIME Type. The units also use the &lt;iframe&gt; HTML tag, which is not validated correctly with the Strict or Transitional doctypes.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">The terms of the AdSense program forbid their affiliates from modifying the code, thus preventing these participants from having validated XHTML websites.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">However a workaround has been found by creating a new normal html site containing only the AdSense ad units and then importing it into the xhtml document with an object tag <sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-7">[8]</a></sup>. This workaround appears to be accepted by Google.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-8">[9]</a></sup></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;"><span class="mw-headline"><strong>How AdSense works</strong></span></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">In order to put ads on a </span><a title="Web page" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Web_page"><span style="color:#333399;">web page</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">, the webmaster inserts </span><a title="JavaScript" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/JavaScript"><span style="color:#333399;">JavaScript</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> code into the page. </span></li>
<li><span style="color:#333399;">Each time a page with an AdSense tag is visited, the </span><a title="JavaScript" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/JavaScript"><span style="color:#333399;">JavaScript</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> creates an </span><a class="mw-redirect" title="Iframe" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Iframe"><span style="color:#333399;">iframe</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> and sets its &#8220;src&#8221; attribute to the page&#8217;s URL. </span></li>

<p><a title="Scraper site" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Scraper_site#Made_for_AdSense"><span style="color:#333399;">MFA</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> (Made For AdSense) is a site or page with little or no content, but filled with advertisements so users have no choice but to click on ads. Such pages were tolerated in the past, but due to complaints Google now disables such accounts.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">There have also been reports of </span><a title="Trojan horse (computing)" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Trojan_horse_%28computing%29"><span style="color:#333399;">Trojans</span></a><span style="color:#333399;"> engineered to produce fake Google ads that are formatted to look like legitimate ones. Webmasters who publish AdSense can receive a lifelong ban without justification.<sup><span style="white-space:nowrap;" title="This claim needs references to reliable sources since October 2007">[<em><a title="Citation needed" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed">citation needed</a></em>]</span></sup> Google claims they cannot &#8220;disclose any specific details&#8221; on fraudulent clicks since it may reveal the nature of their proprietary click-fraud monitoring system.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-14">[15]</a></sup></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">To help prevent click-fraud, AdSense publishers can choose from a number of click-tracking programs. These programs will display detailed information about the visitors who click on the AdSense advertisements. Publishers can use this to determine if they have been a victim of click-fraud or not. There are a number of commercial tracking scripts available for purchase.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">The payment terms for webmasters have also been criticized.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-15">[16]</a></sup> Google withholds payment until an account reaches US$100,<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-16">[17]</a></sup> but many small content providers require a long time – years in many cases – to build up this much AdSense </span><a title="Revenue" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Revenue"><span style="color:#333399;">revenue</span></a><span style="color:#333399;">. However, Google will pay all earned revenue greater than $10 when the AdSense account is closed.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">Google recently came under fire when the official Google AdSense Blog showcased the French video site Imineo.com. This site clearly violates Google&#8217;s AdSense Program Policies by displaying AdSense alongside explicit adult content.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-18">[19]</a></sup> Typically, sites displaying AdSense have been banned from showing adult content.<sup><span style="white-space:nowrap;" title="This claim needs references to reliable sources since October 2007">[<em><a title="Citation needed" href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed">citation needed</a></em>]</span></sup></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#333399;">In addition, Google has been criticized for claiming that they created, or had a bigger part in creating, AdSense than they really did. Most recently, Gokul Rajaram claiming he was the &#8220;godfather&#8221; of AdSense caused some controversy.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-19">[20]</a></sup> Another Google employee who took credit for AdSense was Susan Wojcicki.<sup><a href="http://adsens.wordpress.com/wp-admin/#cite_note-20">[21]</a></sup></span></p>
